Album Of Irish Showbands

The Roy Vogan Collection and Story

My name is Roy Vogan from Tandragee,Co Armagh . My father Bobby Vogan was lead singer in The Pioneer's back in the 40's. I played in the Silver Dollars Showband in 1961..

I started my first band called The West Winds around 1962/3 playing guitar along with Ivan Cooke on bass guitar and vocals from Newtownhamilton, and Sammy Irwin from Portadown lead vocals. Later changing the name to Night Riders when drummer Len Petre from Armagh joined the band. Len left after a few years and Jim Aughey from Portadown took over as drummer and another name change was required and Cool Country was born. Stevie Lynas from Portadown joined on guitar and vocals.
Pedal Steel Guitar was big just then and we aquired a great steel player, Roy Lambert,  23years in total we were on the road.

I had a break for a couple of months but was asked to join Alabama band from Maheralin, I spent 2 or 3 years with them playing the Pedal Steel Guitar, until two and three  piece groups were in demand.

The last band I played in was Alan Graham's Frontline band with Alan on keyboards and vocals, and John Harvey on bass guitar and vocals, and myself on Pedal Steel Guitar. I was with them  for around 6 years.

Kind Regards,

Roy Vogan
